The Electric Blue Acara (Andinoacara pulcher) is a fish in the rather extensive Cichlidae family. They're an extremely well-liked fish among aquarists and in recent years we've seen interest in them increase even more.

The Blue Acara Aequidens pulcher has been a cichlid of choice for many years for the South American cichlid aquarium. Its species term pulcher means "beautiful", and true to its name it is a beautiful medium sized fish cichlid. Its color is mostly a steel blue-gray, but it is distinguished from other Acara species by a broader forehead.

Blue acaras have short, compacted bodies, with heads that are slightly more rounded than most other fish from the cichlid family. Their bodies have a steel blue-grey coloration, but their colors can vary quite a bit due to local diversity. Their bodies have 5 to 8 vertical black stripes (that may not always be visible) and blue iridescent spots.

Blue Acaras need a substrate - Many people keep these cichlids in bare-bottom tanks to prevent them from digging. This is generally to keep the cichlid from flooding the water with substrate particles and making a mess in the process. I don't recommend this strategy, though, because Blue Acaras are evolutionary prone to dig their substrate.

Whatever temperature you choose to remain, it must remain consistent. Fluctuating even within the ideal temperatures will still cause stress levels to rise in the Electric Blue Acara. Regarding pH levels, the water should be somewhere between 7 and 7.5. Although, going up to 8 would be acceptable as well.
